Seborrheic Dermatitis
What Is Seborrheic Dermatitis?
Seborrheic Dermatitis, is a prevalent skin condition that often affects the scalp. This condition, characterized by scaly patches, red skin, and persistent dandruff, can extend to other oily areas of the body. Beyond the scalp, it may impact areas like the face, sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids, and chest, causing discomfort and visible symptoms.
What Causes Seborrheic Dermatitis?
Seborrheic dermatitis does not have one clear cause; instead, a variety of factors can trigger and exacerbate the condition. Weather changes (cold, dry winters or hot, humid conditions), poor scalp hygiene, harsh skin care products, or over-cleansing can irritate the skin. At the same time, an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast, linked to excessive oil, often prompts flare-ups. A weakened immune system can intensify symptoms, as can a poor diet or nutritional deficiencies. Identifying and managing triggers is key to reducing symptoms.
