What Is Trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania is a mental health condition characterized by a compulsive urge to pull out one’s hair, leading to noticeable hair loss. It can affect hair on any body part, but the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes are commonly involved. Individuals with trichotillomania often experience a cycle of tension before hair pulling, followed by relief or pleasure afterward.

What Causes Trichotillomania?

The exact causes of Trichotillomania are not fully understood, but a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors is believed to contribute to its development. There is evidence to suggest a genetic predisposition to the disorder, particularly in individuals with a family history of trichotillomania or other obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. Neurological factors, such as differences in brain structure or chemistry, may also play a role. Stressful life events, trauma, and other environmental factors can trigger or exacerbate the condition.
